Learning About Other Religions, People s Sexual...

As we come to the end of the term looking back at the previous diversity summaries I find that this one in particular gave me more of an encouragement to think beyond what I already knew or didn’t know about religion, people’s sexual orientation and disabilities. From my personal experience and knowledge of other religions I was not expecting to see some that I have never even heard of before, or how much a person’s sexual orientation can have impacts on their lives. As for disabilities, I have a brother who has a disability but it was a great learning experience, even with a short presentation on people with other disabilities, to grasp a deeper recognition of what it means to be a disabled person in the United States. Moving forward, I hope to summarize the presentations presented to the class on the final diversity topics and include my insight on them as well. For this diversity topic, learning about other religions should make us aware of the various world r eligions that exist. For us, these presentation summaries give way to how each person interviewed is affected either by other in their workplace or by society. We have five total presentations we can further our understanding for different religions that we may have never thought of in the aspect of diversity and discrimination. Sacrifice in A Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Dickens

â€Å"For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.† (Romans: 5: 9-10; â€Å"United Church†). Characters like Sydney Carton are people that will give up their own life. Such is the case when Sydney Carton promises Lucie Manette to give his own life for her. He pretends to be Charles Darnay, and he perishes when he gets executed by the guillotine. By sacrificing himself, Sydney allows Charles and Lucie the opportunity of escaping the terror during the French Revolution. The story in which these events take place is called A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens. The central idea of A Tale Of Two Cities is that sacrifice is exemplified by the†¦show more content†¦Charles explains to the courtroom that he married Lucie and that he is the son in law of Dr. Manette which most of the people viewed Manette as a prophet. Charles proves himself that he went to London so he can escape from his familys past and find a better life. Overall, Charles Sacrificed his possessions by renouncing his property and family and moving to England to find a better life. Suddenly. Charles keeps his promise for Gabelle and he goes back to France so he could try to save him. That is how Charles Darnay shows sacrifice in A Tale Of Two Cities. Secondly, sacrifice is exemplified when a character suffers a loss his own possession that results from the struggles he faces. Dr. Manette provides an example of this type of sacrifice. To start off, Dr. Manette is Lucie’s father and a brilliant physician. Doctor Manette spends eighteen years as a prisoner in the Bastille. At the start of the novel, Manette spends time in his lonely room at the Defarges wine shop and he makes shoes because he suffered when he was in the Bastille (SparkNotes Editors). When Lucie finally sees her father, she is shocked of the feature that Dr. Manette appears after the years he had become a freed man. In London, Dr. Manette suffers from some mental shock. LSI GM591 Leadership and Organization Behavior September 9, 2011 According to my LSI, my Primary personal thinking style is avoidance at 80% and my back-up personal thinking style is affiliative at 75%. I agree with my primary personal thinking style, avoidance and my back-up personal thinking style, affiliative. With the avoidance style, I can live life more positively and I can confront the people that cause my distress. Some of the statements about avoidance are true about me, while others aren’t. Example of true statements are: having few strong interests, having difficulty making decisions, uncomfortable discussing feelings and self-doubting and self-blaming. Some of the false statements are: lacking initiative, having difficulty establishing relationships, preoccupied with my own concerns, recently experienced something traumatic and feeling overwhelmed by circumstances. If you tally the true and false statements up, then you would see that I have more false statements than true ones, which tells me that I am less avoidance-oriented now. However, if you look at the definition of avoidance, as avoiding situations that may cause distress, then I would be a more avoidance-oriented person. When I get upset with a friend or family member, then I tend to shut down completely and avoid them for a few days till I am able to discuss what is wrong with me. I also agree with the affiliative style being my back-up personal thinking style because I don’t have a hard time meeting people, I don’t lack effectiveness at work, I don’t avoid group activities, I am able to relax around people and I don’t feel unimportant or disliked. I might feel lonely sometimes, but everyone does at one point or another. Being in the affiliative style benefits me with being liked and feeling a sense of belonging. I would identify achievement as limiting personal thinking style because it was my lowest scoring percentile at 21%. Being achievement-oriented involves recognizing where your efforts make a difference, deciding on a desired outcome, and setting specific goals to help you accomplish it. I would say that my achievement style is lowered because I feel like my efforts makes little differences, I on’t set goals, and I lack interest. However, I don’t lack initiative at work, I take responsibility for my actions and I don’t blame other people for my problems. In school I don’t do homework to achieve or excel, I just do it to get it done and hopefully pass. My dependent, approval, and conventional personal thinking styles all being at 69% percentile could be preventing me from being an achiever. Fo r me to become more achievement-oriented I need to start pleasing myself and stop focusing on what I think I should be doing and instead do what is important to me. I am not a manager yet, but I am pursuing that degree and field now. After reviewing my LSI and learning what it all means, I am going to have a hard time achieving a manager type persona. I think that a manager needs to be encouraging and have a high percentile in the humanistic-encouraging style and mine is only at 25%. I am not uncomfortable with interacting with others, nor do I lack close relationships, nor do I have a problem working in groups. However, I do have a difficult time communicating in terms of speaking in public and telling people what do to or how to do something. Improving my humanistic-encouraging style will improve my ability to lead, manage and teach. Looking back now, it’s weird to see some connections with my growing up strategies with certain personal thinking styles. I remember my mom never making me do any homework or bribing me with rewards if I got all A’s or anything like that, so I have a feeling that had an affect on why I don’t feel a big need to be more achievement-oriented. When my mom got upset with my brother, and me she would just run to her room and I guess, â€Å"avoid† us. So, now when I am upset with a friend, I â€Å"run† away and let it just pass by. My mom was always encouraging me to do things and always said that I can do whatever I put my mind to, so I don’t know why my encouraging style is in the lower percentile. I have learned a lot about myself while taking and reviewing my LSI results. This exercise made me aware of knew things about myself, while letting me admit to myself some other things. For example, I had a feeling I had avoidance problems, but taking this survey and it finding out that information made me think that it is actually real and hurting me more than I thought. My Genome, My Self free essay sample

This is a new technology and provides many risks if it is made available for public use because of the fact that all the loose ends havent been tied up yet. Pinker analyzes how much our traits and health are dependent on our genetic make-up. Is this information developed enough to use in hospitals, or by anyone else who sees it fit? Pinker believes there is still a long way to go when it comes to Genome research. In My Genome, My Self, Pinker examines what benefits that the study of genomes will actually bring. He questions how much this study will actually help because although it is an interesting issue and tells us alot about our make up, what benefit will that bring for our society? He allows his own genome to be sequenced and published for all to see as part of the Personal Genome Project. Pinker acknowledges that the personal sequence was correct about obvious things about himself but didnt prove so accurate when it came to other aspects of his health. He makes it clear that there is a distinction between the two and one shouldnt expect to have or develop every single trait presented by the sequence because there are many other factors which lessen or heighten an individuals chances of having a certain trait. He confirms the idea that most genetic tests only provide a limited amount of information without taking lifestyle and enviromental factors into consideration. Pinker doesnt believe that the Genome testing available now should be used because it mostly tells us things that we could have easily tested in a more simple way. Some things just dont need to be researched so intensely, if you want to know if youre good at math, take a math test. After reading Pinkers essay multiple times and trying to relate it to my own life, I find that I disagree and agree with him on different occasions. While I do agree that this technology is still developing and has not yet reached its full potential, I still think that it should be published for people to see and observe. We can draw our own conclusions to the genome testing done and use them how we please for the time being. As it becomes more sophisticated we will as a result learn more about ourselves and why we have certain traits that others may not possess. And then again, the study provides you with the chances that you will develop a certain trait or characteristic, it doesnt tell you whether or not you will for sure have them. From this I understood that the study will tell you what you are at risk for but fails to tell you how your enviroment and lifestyle affects these risks. Nonetheless, the fact that people will have a better understanding at the diseases and health risks they may have could as a result make them more conscious about the lifestyle decisions they make so that they lead a more healty life. But if we are completely in the dark about these things then we dont really think about them. Out of sight, out of mind if the risk isnt presented to us, we dont really care to make plans to prevent them until we see it having an affect on us. One thing i really agree with Pinker on is his claim about how simple traits and characteristics do not need genetic testing to be seen or proven. If you want to know if someone is flexible, good at math, fast, or has good eye-sight, you can simply test them on that characteristic and see. It doesnt have to be so complicated. Although with improvements in genetic testing I feel that the reason why we are good at certain things, can be explained. Although my opinions on the whole genome issue are debatable I can see where Pinker may have some disagreements. As I have mentioned, I feel like it would be a good idea to publish information about personal genomes and make it accesible to the public. But Pinker believes that it should be restricted information for now and used for research pruposes only. Ofcourse he does allow his own genome to be published with 100,000 others in the Personal Genome Project, he feels it is just so that people can see what the technology can do for now. But he doesnt think the ablility to analyze someones DNA should be given to everyone. Like the early days of the internet, the dawn of personal genomics promises benefits and pitfalls that no one can foresee(137). He thinks that the use of personal genomics will be for things that can be determined without all this technology. He sees people becoming too reliant on the information and not using their own common sense to see what traits they do or dont possess. Also, Pinker doesnt believe that the test is all that accurate because of his own experiences with it. Even though it only presented him with the chances of developing a certain trait, he still believes it was way off in determining his actual risks. In response to Pinkers doubts about genomic testing, I would say that the information we do have now is still very compelling and could be utilized to help individuals in special ways that fit them personally. What is the harm of knowing that you are more at risk for a certain disease, even though you dont have it? The purpose of genome testing is not to only tell you what you are, but also what you could be. I personally know that I would take my lifestyle into account alot more if I knew what I was at risk for more than others. After reading through all of Pinkers essay, I have come to my own conclusion that there are definitely very clear pros and cons of this research. If we knew what we were at risk for, we could take special precautions to avoid those risks. However, I agree with Pinker that this information is not developed enough to be used in hospitals or clinics. In the future it would be an amazing development to see customized medicine for patients based on their genome sequence because there would be no more trial and error when testing out products. We are still years from that but the information available now is still very useful for us to know now. Ofcourse, not to be taken too seriously because genome testing is definitley not the only way to determine what traits we possess.
